“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” – Nelson Mandela
In South Africa, completing Matric (the final year of high school, similar to Grade 12 or senior secondary school) is a significant milestone. However, for many young people in the communities we serve, finishing school is only the beginning of a much bigger challenge. Without guidance, access to information, or the practical tools needed to take the next step, many leave school unsure of what opportunities are available to them.
That is why we hosted our very first Sinani Matric Workshop. The workshop was designed to help students move from simply hoping for a better future to actively planning and pursuing one. We invited not only this year’s matric learners but also young adults from previous matric classes who are currently not studying or employed. In total, 25 young people from five different communities attended.
The first session was led by Prof. Msakha Mono from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Dr. Nozipho Bele from the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN). Together, they challenged our students to think beyond what they had always known and to imagine the possibilities that lie ahead. They introduced the different educational pathways available in South Africa and encouraged each student to begin asking important questions about their future.
The second presentation was led by Dr. Leane Grobbelaar from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). She guided students through the practical side of planning for higher education, explaining the university application process, how to calculate APS (Admission Point Scores), funding opportunities, and what options are available if matric results are lower than expected.
The afternoon turned information into action. Our partners at Octopi brought laptops and technicians who sat one on one with each student, helping them create an email address if they didn’t already have one. Every student had the hard copies of their important documents scanned and saved to their email, ensuring they would always have digital copies readily available for future applications.
Some students were then assisted in submitting their university applications on the day. For those who were not yet ready to apply, they left with information on suitable institutions, clear step by step application guides, and the assurance that support would continue. Students can reach out directly to our team whenever they need help, or receive assistance through their local Life Centre.
This workshop was far more than an information session. It was about equipping young people with the confidence, knowledge, and practical tools to take ownership of their future. For many, it was the first time someone had walked alongside them and shown them that these opportunities were within reach.
To every speaker, volunteer, partner, and prayer supporter who made this day possible, thank you. Your investment is helping to change the trajectory of young lives, one student at a time. We cannot wait to see where this journey leads them.
